1. In addition to the DR.MAGGIE™ Extra Strength Formula, is there a regular strength product?
Originally, there were 2 forms of the product in development - DR.MAGGIEJoint Formula with Glucosamine HCl, and Vitamin C; and the Extra Strength version, with Chondroitin added. However, when we saw the remarkable results that were achieved with the Extra Strength version, we became convinced that we would be doing our customers and their suffering animals a disservice by offering a product that did not offer optimal results.
Moreover we found that by adding chondroitin, the dose could be cut in half after an initial treatment period of about a month. At the reduced dose, there was no price difference between the 2 products.
In further researching the effects of chondroitin we found that recent studies indicate that it not only suppresses the breakdown of cartilage, slowing the progression of degenerative joint disease, but it may actually be more important than glucosamine in reducing pain from arthritis.
So, for optimal results at an affordable price, DR.MAGGIEES (Extra Strength) Joint Formula is the best solution we could offer. You and your companion animals deserve nothing less.

2. I have heard that chondroitin offers no therapeutic benefits because its molecules are too large to be absorbed by humans, and I suppose cats and dogs as well.
We’ve heard this rumour as well, and it is just that – a misguided and completely false rumour. Chondroitin sulfate taken orally is absorbed within hours. In several European studies, chondroitin tagged with radioactive isotopes was detected in the cartilage and synovial fluid of horses, dogs, rabbits and humans 24 hours after being administered orally. Not only is high quality chondroitin sulfate (as is used in DR.MAGGIEES Joint Formula) absorbed, but it has been shown to arrive promptly where it is needed – in joint tissue and fluid.

3. My pet food contains glucosamine and chondroitin. Do I still need a supplement for joints?
The amount of these nutrients typically found in food are relatively insignificant. Food packages will identify that the amounts are “not for therapeutic use” meaning that they are not sufficient for the treatment or prevention of joint disease.
You can judge for yourself by comparing the daily dose of each nutrient in the amount of food your pet eats each day with the daily amounts in DR.MAGGIEES Joint Formula.
For instance, a 70-lb. dog would require 750mg of glucosamine HCl, and 600 mg of chondroitin sulfate for arthritis prevention, or 1 ½ tablets per day. To treat symptoms over the first month, the recommended amounts are 1500mg of glucosamine, and 1200mg of chondroitin, or 3 tablets per day. Even the best foods fall far short of these therapeutic levels.

4. I have noticed glucosamine products in drug stores and health food stores for lower prices. Why should I pay more for the DR.MAGGIEES Joint Formula?
You can pay less. However you can’t find a more effective formula with the same ingredients as DR.MAGGIEES Joint Formula for less. There are 3 main factors that affect the price:

i.) Many of the less expensive products use glucosamine sulfate, which costs less than the glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) used in the DR.MAGGIE™ supplement. The sulfate version is much less effective than glucosamine hydrochloride.

ii.) More importantly, most of the inexpensive products do not contain chondroitin. Chondroitin is by far the most expensive component of the DR.MAGGIE™ formula, and it is absolutely crucial for pain management, and to slow the progression of osteoarthritis. Recent studies indicate that chondroitin, in the recommended dose, is the most important single factor in pain management and long term outcome – more important even than glucosamine HCl.

iii.) The cost is also determined by the dose. The dose of key nutrients in DR.MAGGIE™ is calculated and tested for dogs and cats, to achieve optimal results. Some products may appear to cost less, by recommending lower, less effective doses. And don’t forget, in most cases, the recommended dose (and the cost) of DR.MAGGIE™ Joint Formula can be reduced by half after the initial treatment period. Many products, particularly those without chondroitin, do not provide this benefit.

DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula is your best value because it delivers the best results - we guarantee it.

5. I have heard good things about MSM for arthritis. Why doesn’t the DR.MAGGIE formula contain MSM?
At Animal Health Labs we have investigated MSM and as yet there is no hard evidence that it works consistently, has long-term benefits, or even a convincing case for how it works. We are committed to providing solutions that are scientifically proven effective.

6. What happens if I stop giving DR.MAGGIE Joint Formula to my pet?
Symptoms, i.e.: pain, stiffness, and inflammation will return, usually within 2 weeks, and will become progressively worse. Osteoarthritis is an incurable, progressive, life-long condition. The nutrients in the DR.MAGGIE™ supplement can treat it, but the treatment must be maintained.
If treatment is stopped for more than a few days, when it is resumed, it should be at the initial dose (double the maintenance dose) for a few weeks.

7. I have a large dog – over 100 lbs. However the recommended dose of DR.MAGGIE gives him more glucosamine and chondroitin than is recommended for humans. Why would a 100 lb. dog need more than a 200 lb. human?
Dogs (and cats) metabolize nutrients differently than humans. In this case, with a faster metabolism and relatively short gut, your dog does need more than a human would to get to get the desired benefits. When treating your pet, it’s always important to use products that are specifically designed for them.

8. Can I overdose my pet?
Theoretically it is possible to overdose with anything. However the compounds used in DR.MAGGIEES Joint Formula are extremely safe and present no serious side effects. The active ingredients are all natural. Unlike some other “natural” ingredients such as herbal remedies, they actually occur naturally in your pet’s body. They are not foreign and this contributes to the very low toxicity. Even a very large overdose would at worst cause temporary vomiting and/or diarrhea.

9. I have noticed some brown speckles that appear in some of the DR.MAGGIE tablets. What is this?
The brown speckles can occur if the tablets are exposed to humidity. It is actually the cellulose in the tablet binder that sometimes changes colour. Cellulose is innocuous plant matter that we use to give the tablets their chewable, breakable texture. Once the bottle is opened and the cotton is removed even a small amount of humidity may cause speckling. But the active ingredients are not affected and the product retains its full potency and safety.

10. My vet has recommened Metacam for my dog’s arthritis. It helps with the pain, but I have to restrict her activity. Can I give her the DR.MAGGIE Joint Formula as well? Will it allow her to be more active?
Metacam is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that many vets recommend for osteoarthritis. It is a powerful pain killer and anti-inflammatory. You dog feels much better while she’s taking it, so you have to restrict her activity so she doesn’t further damage her joints while not feeling the pain.
DR.MAGGIEES Joint Formula is all natural, and does not interact with Metacam or other arthritis drugs. You can give it to her with the Metacam, in fact we recommend it. Over the initial 4 to 6 weeks that she is on DR.MAGGIE™ , her joints will become more lubricated, and she will begin to repair the cartilage in her joints. Over this period many people are able to gradually reduce the amount of Metacam their pet requires without experiencing pain. After 4 to 6 weeks on the initial recommended dose of DR.MAGGIE™ , you should be able to reduce to the maintenance dose, and at this point, many animals don’t need any Metacam at all. With DR.MAGGIE ES Joint Formula she doesn’t just feel better, her joints are better, so she can exercise freely.
