Glucosamine and Chondroitin

The Glucosamine HCl and Chondroitin Sulfate used in the DR. MAGGIE™ Extra Strength Joint Formula have been repeatedly scientifically proven to reverse the symptoms of arthritis and other degenerative joint disease, and to promote healing of joint injury by:

  • Repairing and strengthening cartilage
  • Lubricating joints by increasing synovial fluid
  • Suppressing enzymes that cause cartilage breakdown
  • Suppressing enzymes that cause destructive, painful inflammation
  • Stimulating natural production of Hyaluronic Acid
  • Reducing or eliminating pain, stiffness, and inflammation
  • Slowing the progression of arthritis
  • Providing maximum long term mobility and comfort

SAFE, CONVENIENT, ECONOMICAL QUALITY OF LIFE

Note:

  • This product is not recommended for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Use caution when administering to pets with diabetes as glucosamine may affect blood sugar.

Ingredients

Each chewtab contains:

  • 500 mg Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL) (USP*)
  • 400 mg Chondroitin Sulfate (low density, USP*)
  • 50 mg Vitamin C (USP*)
  • Natural chicken-type flavour from vegetable sources (contains no chicken)

Glucosamine and chondroitin have been used for decades without any reported complications or listing of serious side effects.

The DR. MAGGIE™ formula is safe and well suited to long term use. It can be used with NSAIDs and other pain medication and over time usually reduces the need for them.

*USP – United States Pharmacopeial Convention

This designation ensures that these compounds are manufactured to the highest standards of purity, safety and consistency. The USP standards are recognized by Health Canada.

Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCl)

The hydrochloride form of glucosamine used in the DR. MAGGIE™ formula is highly concentrated and provides the most usable glucosamine by volume.  Glucosamine HCl contains substantially less sodium per effective dose than other forms.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

  • added for its beneficial antioxidant effects
  • aids in glucosamine uptake
  • promotes collagen production for even better results

“Chicken Type” Flavour

  • The vegan flavour is safe for animals with chicken allergies

Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin Sulfate is a structural component of cartilage. Studies and clinical trials indicate that glucosamine and chondroitin are synergistic: their effects together are more powerful than their “added” effects. Yet many glucosamine products use little or no chondroitin. Some products substitute chondroitin with MSM, yucca, boswellia or other anti-inflammatory ingredients. These compounds may provide some benefit, but unlike chondroitin, they will NOT:

  • contribute to cartilage regeneration
  • suppress the catabolic enzymes that cause painful and damaging inflammation and cartilage breakdown
  • In addition, some products use chondroitin from shark cartilage or “marine cartilage” which has a high molecular density and cannot be absorbed or utilized effectively. The chondroitin in the DR. MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula is:
  • low density
  • pharmaceutical grade (USP)
  • absorbed quickly and utilized for maximum benefit

Long term studies now indicate that the right amount of the right kind of chondroitin not only relieves the symptoms of joint disease, but that it slows the progression of arthritis for maximum long term mobility and comfort.

DR. MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula uses optimal amounts of the safest and most effective ingredients in their purest form. These compounds are natural to the anatomy of your companion animals so they are easily absorbed and utilized for guaranteed maximum results.

Here are some common ingredients found in other products that WE DO NOT USE, and why.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
The Glucosamine HCl in the Dr. Maggie ES Joint Formula naturally stimulates production of HA, and no additional HA is necessary or beneficial.

  • Hyaluronic Acid is the main component of synovial fluid, the viscous fluid that lubricates joints for smooth, friction-free movement.

In studies where HA was used without Glucosamine HCl, improvement was noted, however, the typical dose of HA was 50-100mg per day – many times more than is typically found in joint formulations.

There is a theoretical risk associated with the oral supplementation of Hyaluronic Acid due to it’s know propensity to promote tumor growth and metastasis. For scientific and medical studies, journals, and articles on this subject click here.

MSM (Methysulfonylmethane), yucca, boswellia or other anti-inflammatory ingredients don’t provide the same benefit.

  • In clinical observations, no further benefit was evident from the addition of MSM to animals that had been using MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula for 8 weeks or more.
  • Studies have shown positive results when MSM was administered on it’s own in large doses eg. 6000mg per day. Dosages of MSM typically found in pet joint formulations are a small fraction of this level making them insignificant.
  • The Chondroitin in DR. MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula has a much more powerful anti-inflammatory effect than MSM yucca, boswellia or other anti-inflammatory ingredients. In addition it has many other important benefits.

Glucosamine Sulphate

  • Glucosamine sulphate is stabilized with sodium chloride – more commonly known as table salt – and can contain as much as 30% sodium
  • It is significantly less absorbable than the Glucosamine HCl used in DR. MAGGIE™

QUALITY AND PURITY

  • Glucosamine and chondroitin products vary widely in purity and quality, which is why efficacy and absorption rates vary dramatically, as does price. Other products may cost less but, our goal is to use the best ingredients to achieve the best results.
  • At Animal Health Laboratories Ltd. we use only the highest quality, human and pharmaceutical (USP) grade ingredients, and we guarantee consistent quality, purity and potency.

Dosage Information

MAGGIE™ Joint Formula is most effective when given in divided doses morning and evening. Dosage information appears on the label. The following chart will give you some idea of how long a 60 or 120 tablet bottle will last for your pet, at each stage (initial or maintenance) of therapy. For large, or multiple animals, the larger size can result in a significant cost saving.

COMFORT & MOBILITY | COST PER DAY
Initial Dose Approx Cost per Day* Maintenance Dose Approx Cost per Day*
Cats & Dogs
under 11 Kg (24 lbs) 1 tablet 42¢ 1⁄2 tablet 21¢
Dogs
11 – 22 Kg (25 – 49 lbs) 2 tablets 83¢ 1 tablet 42¢
23 – 45 Kg (50 – 99 lbs) 3 tablets $1.25 11⁄2 tablets 63¢
over 45 Kg (100+ lbs) 4 tablets $1.67 2 tablets 83¢
*Based on manufacturer’s suggested retail price for 120 tablets. The soft tablets can be easily crumbled and mixed with wet or dry food, or given as a treat. CAUTION: If symptoms persist, consult your veterinarian.

Maintenance Dose

For pets with symptoms of arthritis, after 4 to 6 weeks on the initial dose, once gradual improvement in mobility has been noticed, the dose can usually be reduced by half for ongoing maintenance. However, if symptoms worsen, resume the initial dose. Most animals will continue to improve and do well on a maintenance dose, and half the dose means half the cost. You will be able to tell if the reduced dose is right for your pet.

Studies show that pain and inflammation will reoccur if the product is discontinued, so pets should not stop taking it.

Preventative Dose

For prevention of arthritis, start senior animals on a daily maintenance dose (half the initial recommended dose) at approximately 7 years of age, or earlier for large breed dogs, and very active dogs which experience a lot of stress on their joints. A half dose taken throughout old age can prevent symptoms from ever developing.

Recovery from Injury or Surgery

After joint surgery or injury, start with an initial dose. Depending on the severity of the trauma, after an initial healing period of 4 to 6 weeks, the dose can usually be reduced to the maintenance level. If pain increases, resume the initial dose.

In most cases of joint trauma, the animal is susceptible to premature arthritis, and therefore should continue permanently on the maintenance dose for the best long term outcome.

In all cases where injury and surgery are involved, consult your veterinarian regarding recovery and maintenance therapies.

Cost Benefit

DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula provides an important cost benefit: after taking it for 4 to 6 weeks, once symptoms have been noticeably reduced, the dose can be cut by half for ongoing maintenance. Improvement has been seen to continue for several months even at the reduced dose before leveling off. Half the dose means half the cost!

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to the DR.MAGGIE™ Extra Strength Formula, is there a regular strength product?

No. The ES formula is addresses a variety of conditions simply by modifying the dose.

For dogs that are symptomatic with joint pain from injury, surgery, or degenerative joint disease such as arthritis, the full “initial dose” is recommended usually for 4 – 6 weeks. After that time the dose can usually be reduced by half for ongoing maintenance of chronic conditions.

In the case of dysplasia, depending on the severity of the malformation, it may be necessary to continue the full dose indefinitely.

For prevention of arthritis for senior and very active animals a half or “maintenance” dose is recommended from middle age to keep joints healthy throughout their life.

For large breed puppies a half “maintenance” dose is recommended from 6 – 18 months to support the formation of healthy joints during their fast growth period.

My pet food contains glucosamine and chondroitin. Do I still need a supplement for joints?

Food packages will identify that the glucosamine and chondroitin they contain are “not for therapeutic use” meaning that they are not sufficient for the treatment or prevention of joint disease. They can provide some benefit in delaying the onset of arthritis. However, the quality and efficacy does not compare to the DR.MAGGIE™ formula.

If your companion animal has a joint injury, surgery, or is exhibiting pain and stiffness, the Dr. Maggie formula will be much more effective in rehabilitating damaged joints and providing life long pain free mobility.

I have noticed glucosamine products in drug stores and health food stores for lower prices. Why should I pay more for the DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula?

You can pay less. However you can’t find a formula that is as effective as the DR.MAGGIE™ formula for less.

Most drugstore and health food store brands use glucosamine sulfate rather than the more expensive, much more effective glucosamine HCl.

Surprisingly, human products rarely use pharmaceutical grade (USP) ingredients which is the only quality used in DR.MAGGIE™.

These factors dramatically impact the results in pain management and joint health.

I have heard good things about MSM for arthritis. Why doesn’t the DR.MAGGIE™ formula contain MSM?

In clinical observations, no further benefit was evident from the addition of MSM to animals that had been using DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula for 8 weeks or more.

Studies have shown positive results when MSM was administered on it’s own in large doses e.g. 6000mg per day. Dosages of MSM typically found in joint formulations are a small fraction of this level making them insignificant.

The Chondroitin in DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula has a much more powerful anti-inflammatory effect than MSM yucca, boswellia or other anti-inflammatory ingredients. In addition it has many other important benefits.

What happens if I stop giving DR.MAGGIE™ Joint Formula to my pet?

For animals with chronic joint disease, pain and stiffness will recur if the product is discontinued, so they should not stop taking it.

If treatment is stopped for more than a few days, when it is resumed, it should be at the initial dose (double the maintenance dose) for a few weeks.

Unlike NSAIDs and some herbal remedies the DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula is safe and recommended for prolonged use.

I have a large dog – over 100 lbs. However the recommended dose of DR.MAGGIE™ gives him more glucosamine and chondroitin than is recommended for humans. Why would a 100 lb. dog need more than a 200 lb. human?
Dogs (and cats) metabolize nutrients differently than humans. In this case, with a faster metabolism and relatively short gut, your dog does need more than a human of relative size would to get to get the desired benefits.
My pet ate most of the jar, is this dangerous?
No. The compounds used in DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula are extremely safe and present no serious side effects even when ingested in large amounts.
My vet has recommended Metacam for my dog’s arthritis. Can I give her the DR.MAGGIE™ Joint Formula as well?

Metacam is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that many vets recommend for osteoarthritis. It is a powerful pain killer and anti-inflammatory. Your dog feels much better, however her joints are still damaged, so you have to restrict her activity to prevent further injury.

DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula works differently. Over the initial 4 to 6 weeks that she is on DR.MAGGIE™, she will begin to repair, strengthen and lubricate her joint tissue. Metacam should not be withdrawn right away or she will experience pain. These products are safe when given together. After 4 to 6 weeks on the initial recommended dose of DR.MAGGIE™ you should be able to reduce to the maintenance (half) dose, and at this point, many animals don’t need any Metacam at all.

With DR.MAGGIE ES Joint Formula she doesn’t just feel better, her joints are better, so she can exercise freely.

What is the difference between Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCl) and Glucosamine Sulfate?
The hydrochloride form of glucosamine used in the DR.MAGGIE™ formula is more concentrated than sulphate and provides more usable glucosamine by volume.  Glucosamine HCl contains substantially less sodium per effective dose. Glucosamine sulphate is stabilized with sodium chloride – more commonly known as table salt – and can contain as much as 30% sodium.
Why don’t you use Hyaluronic Acid (HA)?

The Glucosamine HCl in the DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula naturally stimulates production of HA, and no additional HA is necessary or beneficial.

            • Hyaluronic Acid is the main component of synovial fluid, the viscous fluid that lubricates joints for smooth, friction-free movement.
            • In studies where HA was used without Glucosamine HCl, improvement was noted, however, the typical dose of HA was 50-100mg per day – many times more than is typically found in joint formulations.
Why is there more chondroitin in DR.MAGGIE™ than my product?

The amount of chondroitin we use is based on numerous studies and clinical trials over decades, and is calculated to produce optimal results. Because high quality, low density USP grade chondroitin, such as we use, is many times more expensive than glucosamine many products skimp on the amount of chondroitin to lower costs. Long term studies now indicate that the right amount of the right kind of chondroitin not only relieves the symptoms of joint disease, but that it slows the progression of arthritis for maximum long term mobility and comfort. DR.MAGGIE™ does not compromise on your pet’s health.

Click here for more about chondroitin.

Are there any side effects?
Glucosamine and chondroitin have been used for decades without any reported complications or listing of serious side effects. Unlike NSAIDs (Metacam, Rimadyl, ibuprofen) which can cause stomach upset and even ulcers, DR.MAGGIE™ ES Joint Formula is safe and well suited to long term use.
Does the DR.MAGGIE™ joint formula come in a powder?
Because powders tend to settle in the jar the dosing is unreliable.  By pressing our ingredients into a soft tablet, the dose is always precise, no measuring is required, and you can see that the entire dose has been consumed, whereas powders tend to cling to side of a food dish. If you require a powder, it’s very easy to crush the soft tablet with a spoon.  It can easily be broken into half or quarters by hand.
What is dysplasia and can DR.MAGGIE™ help?
Dysplasia is a malformation of the joint most commonly occurring in hips of large breed dogs, though it can occur in any breed and in other joints. The malformation can cause lameness and premature arthritis. The DR.MAGGIE™ formula can help by maintaining and lubricating cartilage in the joint and relieving pain and stiffness. The degree of relief is dependent on the severity of the condition.
